The Division of General Surgery at the Southern Illinois University strives to provide you with the most current information regarding our physicians, clinical activities, educational programs, research and staff.
Founded less than thirty years ago, our division has seen a recent explosive growth.
Six faculty have been recruited in the last four years which have added new programs in pediatric, colorectal, and trauma surgery.
Additional strength has also been added to the oncologic surgery and critical care program. Currently, our faculty can provide services in all of the various specialty areas of general surgery.
The educational program in the Department continues to be one of our major strengths. Innovative educational research at SIU has resulted in programs to provide the students and residents in general surgery the most comprehensive learning experience available in the country. For example, the surgical skills lab in our department has become a model for other surgical programs throughout the world.
The residency program has recently expanded to include three chief residents and has full ACGME accreditation.
Research takes many forms in our division including basic science, clinical, and educational research programs. In the laboratory, ongoing studies investigate the etiology and treatment of necrotizing enterocolitis - a major problem in premature infants. Other studies focus on the role of Vitamin E in the treatment of a variety of different cancers.
Clinical studies center on outcomes in transplant patients and educational research is directed at different ways of evaluating performance students and residents as well as the development of new teaching techniques in the operating room and in the clinics. We are proud of what we have developed here at SIU. We hope you will take the time to look through this website to learn of the many programs that we offer. If we can be of any help to you clinically or through our educational programs, please do not hesitate to contact us.
In the laboratories and the clinical arena, faculty of the Division of General Surgery are spearheading numerous research projects. The most notable basic science research can be found in the laboratories Dr. Elizabeth Peralta as they investigate mechanisms of carcinogenesis with particular attention to the antioxidant effect of Vitamin E succinate.
Dr. John Sutyak is investigating new methodologies to teach complex surgical procedures in a surgical skills lab.
The faculty are actively engaged in clinical and educational research. Please click on any area of our research to see exactly what's going on in any of our laboratories.
