Surgical Oncology

Care of malignant diseases of the foregut, hepatobiliary system, breast, soft tissues, colon, and rectum is provided by specialized individuals within the Division of General Surgery.  Division faculty are involved in leadership roles in multidisciplinary care teams in the areas of breast, colorectal cancer, foregut, and hepatobiliary malignancies, serving to provide state-of-the-art care of the cancer patient, in collaboration with the Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at SIU.   SCI resources include a core research facility with state of the art imaging, tumor repository, and flow cytometry capabilities.  Patient navigation, psycho-oncology, and biostatistics support are also offered as part of the SCI’s services.

Division faculty are also engaged in research protocols evaluating advanced multidisciplinary treatment strategies for cancer, and translational and outcomes research, in collaboration with both allied oncologic specialists and basic science researchers at SIU.  Advanced reconstructive surgery support for patients requiring major resections as part of their cancer management is also provided as part of the multidisciplinary management through the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

The collective care capability provided by our faculty and support staff, and their commitment to multispecialty care plans to optimize patient outcomes, constitutes a major contribution to the healthcare of the region.
