Current research looks at specific nerve fiber activation in the vagus nerve during vagus nerve stimulation. This study attempts to determine which specific fibers are stimulated while using vagal nerve stimulation during the treatment of epilepsy. Correlating outcome with specific nerve 5 activation may be able to determine new stimulation parameters for the treatment of refractory epilepsy
patients.
Another area of research interest in our practice is based on the possibility of neuronal survival afer stereotactic track lesioning. This study attempts to determine the survival possibility of deaferented neurons after exposing them to a specific growth medium. This research is done in conjunction with Gregory Brewer, PhD.
