Surgical Treatments for Joint Pain
Arthroscopy (also called arthroscopic surgery or a “joint scope procedure”) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure involving the insertion of an arthroscope through a small incision. The procedure is used to determine the amount of damage to a joint, and can be used to remove torn cartilage, or reconstruct torn ligaments. The procedure is minimally invasive, and therefore has a much shorter recovery time than more invasive procedures. Arthroscopic procedures are generally out-patient, same-day surgical procedures.
Arthroplasty (also called “joint replacement”) is a surgical procedure to restore the integrity and function of a joint. A joint can be restored by resurfacing the bones. An artificial joint (called a prosthesis) may also be used. Patients often refer to arthroscopy by the joint affected, such as a hip or knee replacement surgery.
Various types of arthritis may affect the joints. Osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease, is a loss of the cartilage or cushion in a joint, and is the most common reason for arthroplasty. When this occurs, the patient may hear crackling noises or experience pain from one bone rubbing directly on the other bone when they use the affected joint.
Arthroscopy may be used to remove the torn cartilage, but Arthroplasty would be required to resurface the affected bones or replace the joint with a prosthetic one.
