Since 2001, Dr. Freitag has set a standard in teaching excellence and patient care. Dedication, experience and patience are what make Dr. Freitag one of SIU’s top educators and spine surgeons.  Dr. Freitag’s practice is devoted to adult spinal surgery, with a focus on minimally invasive procedures.
Dr. Freitag received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.  He completed his internship and residency in orthopaedics at the Northwestern University McGraw Medical Center in Chicago.  He earned his doctorate in anatomy from the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago, and his bachelor’s degree from University of Illinois-Chicago Circle.

Since 2002, Dr. Freitag has been a part of the Admissions Committee (medical students) at SIU School of Medicine and is currently the Program Director for the E. Shannon Stauffer Spine Fellowship program.  His teaching and clinical responsibilities are focused to the 2nd & 3rd year medical students as well as 2nd & 3rd year Orthopaedic Residents.
Dr. Freitag serves on many committees both here and outside SIU School of Medicine.  He is also a member of many nationally known medical societies including the North American Spine Society (NASS).
