Orthopaedic Resident Research

Ken Illingworth at the AAOSOrthopaedic Resident Research The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery believes strongly in the importance of advancing the practice of orthopaedics through clinical and basic science research. Residents are expected to complete one publishable manuscript within their 5 years of training. However, most residents complete or help contribute to many more research studies. In addition to our supportive faculty attending, we have a strong research team to help with the design and implementation of projects throughout your training.

There is a wide variety of research actively going on at SIU, including the investigation of multimodal pain control, family history of total joint arthroplasty and radiographic characteristics, and the prevalence of vitamin d deficiency in pediatric patients with non-specific musculoskeletal pain. Residents are encouraged to present their research at regional, national, and international meetings. Recently, residents’ research projects have been presented at conferences for the American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Association, and the Canadian Orthopaedic Association.
