Spine

Not all back problems can be solved with surgery.  Spine surgery is typically recommended only when a period of nonsurgical treatment — such as medications and physical therapy — has not relieved the painful symptoms caused by your back problem.  In addition, surgery is only considered if your doctor can pinpoint the exact source of your pain, such as a herniated disk or spinal stenosis.

At SIU Orthopaedics, our Spine Team specializes in determining the cause or your pain, and the best course of treatment.  New patients are first seen by one of our Physician Assistants, Jacob Monsivais, MPAS, PA-C, , or, in Quincy, by Nurse Practitioner Nicollette Haubrich, MSN, FNP-BC.  They will take you through the conservative steps to alleviate your pain using non-surgical treatments.  Only when those methods are ruled out as ineffective are patients referred to a spine surgeon.

There are a variety of surgical options for back pain, each specific to the cause of the pain.  Our surgeons treat each patient as an individual, with treatments designed for your specific situation.  The American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons offers descriptions of many of these procedures and options at their website,
