Message from Dr. Khaled J Saleh, Professor and Chair; Division of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation; Director of Clinical and Translational Research:
Our vision is to develop an internationally renowned unit of excellence for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of musculoskeletal diseases that will improve quality of life for the patients we treat at SIU. We have integrated clinical services, education, and research related to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of bone and joint related diseases to shape the face of musculoskeletal health care delivery.
The conduct of research is critically important to the mission of SIU School of Medicine and the Division of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. Research activities within the Division support the delivery of high quality care and provide patients with alternative treatment options not widely available. This has been effectively accomplished by our faculty while also ensuring the highest quality care for our patients and educational opportunities for students and residents.
The Division has invested significantly in the research infrastructure for Orthopaedics. Clinical trial support staff within the Division are available and active in coordinating and overseeing sponsored and investigator-initiated study protocols of the Division. The support staff facilitates industry sponsored drug and device trials.
Message from Brooke Robinson, SIU School of Medicine, Clinical Research Specialist:
As a recent Masters in Public Health graduate from an Illinois university, I would have gladly foregone my paid internship to have an experience like this to put on my resume and/or to open doors and build networks that I didn't know existed. Furthermore, even after having completed my masters degree and graduating summa cum laude, I had only one paper published and was thus not as marketable as others in the nation. In this economy, students need to have every opportunity that is available to them in order to be competitive in the "real world" and thus succeed. I am excited to be working with this institution and networking with other academic entities to increase job opportunities for students and musculoskeletal research throughout the nation.
