Mission of SIU School of Medicine
Our mission at the SIU School of Medicine, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery is to be a leader in education, research, and comprehensive patient care. We participate in the overall educational mission of the SIU School of Medicine by contributing orthopaedic medicine expertise to all levels of medical education. We inspire and train the experts of tomorrow, through residency and fellowship programs that draw the highest quality of students and physicians.

 

Requirements

  • Graduation from an LCME-accredited medical school or an AOA-accredited osteopathic school
  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited orthopaedic residency
  • Board-eligible or Board-certified in orthopaedic surgery
  • Obtain a permanent Illinois license
  • Accepted on staff at affiliated hospitals

Goals

  • To gain experience in minimally invasive and alternative approaches to hip and knee replacement, unicondylar knee replacement, hip resurfacing, management of femoral acetabular impingement, hip arthroscopy, revision hip and knee replacement, and other state of the art techniques along with computer assisted surgery
  • To gain experience in a wide array of surgical options including cartilage transplant procedures, arthroscopy of the hip and knee, osteotomy, and open procedures of the hip and knee
  • To build upon existing research skills with extensive exposure to research methodology, study design, and critical data review and analysis.

 

Responsibilities

  • Evaluation, admission, surgical procedures, and day-to-day management of spine patients under direction of participating surgeons
  • Education and supervision of orthopaedic residents
  • Participation in the educational activities of the residency program
  • Participation in at least two research projects
