The Central Illinois Amputee Clinic provides amputees from central and southern Illinois with the most advanced medical and prosthetic care, as well as physical therapy.

The clinic is held from 1-4 p.m. on the first Monday afternoon each month at 355 W. Carpenter Street, Suite B, in Springfield, Illinois.

"Amputees face many unique challenges and we provide the most current medical support possible to allow them to maintain independent and healthy lifestyles," says Dr. David Olysav, associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at SIU School of Medicine. Dr. Olysav works with two area prosthetists from Orthotic and Prosthetic Associates, Terry J. Supan and Daryl G. Barth, to provide patient care. The three joined forces last year to create the multidisciplinary clinic to help individuals with amputations.
The clinic, which originally opened in 1982, was re-opened last year with a new focus and enhanced treatment opportunities. Patients are treated for a variety of ailments associated with an amputated limb, from skin conditions to recurring prosthetic fitting complications.
Physical therapy, occupational therapy, dietary consultation and social services - all necessary components of complete quality health care required by amputee patients - are available at the SIU School of Medicine through hospital ancillary staff, says Dr. Olysav.
Patients having difficulty with their prosthesis visit the clinic to be evaluated. A team approach is then taken, with a consultation with Dr. Olysav, a physical therapist, prosthetist and nurse. This approach is faster, more efficient and provides better quality treatment for the
patient, according to Dr. Olysav. "The clinic is designed to offer medical treatment and prosthetic services for amputees that are having difficulties," says Dr. Olysav. "Patients benefit from the convenience of having all of their special medical needs met with one visit. The unique multidisciplinary clinic offers the convenience of multiple specialists at a single visit."
The clinic offers the most up-to-date technology and advances in the field, including myoelectric prosthetics for upper extremities, which are muscle-driven devices to allow patients greater mobility, and computer prosthetics for lower extremities, which greatly increases a patient's activity levels.
The clinic expects to continue to grow and expand the number of patients it can service. Dr. Olysav, Supan and Barth are active members of the International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO). Dr. John Fisk, also an active member of ISPO, is an orthopaedic surgeon at SIU School of Medicine. He has extensive experience in the care of pediatric amputees, who are also often patients of the clinic.
