What is a Nurse Practitioner?

A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse who has completed specific advanced nursing education (generally a master's degree or doctoral degree) and training in the diagnosis and management of common as well as complex medical conditions. In some states, nurse practitioners function independent of physician involvement.

Working with a physician, a nurse practitioner provides general medical care and treatment of patients, including performing physical exams, assessing patients' clinical problems, and recommending medications or other forms of treatment. Nurse practitioners examine patients, order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests; record physical findings, formulate treatment plans and prognoses, make referrals to physicians if indicated, and determine when the patient has recovered.

NPS are providers that:

Take patient histories, perform physical exams, and order appropriate lab tests and procedures
Diagnose, treat, and manage acute and chronic diseases
Provide prescriptions and coordinate referrals
Promote health activities in collaboration with patients

NPs are able to:

Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests such as x-rays and labs
Diagnose and treat acute and chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, illness, and injury
Prescribe medications and other treatments
Manage patients overall care
Spend time counseling patients
Help patients learn how their actions affect health and well being

1. Nurse practitioners are very capable, however, the surgeon is available if a second opinion is required.

2. Those who insist on seeing the surgeon instead of the nurse practitioner might have to wait longer for an appointment. Although medical offices would love to see every patient as soon as their services are required, it is not always possible. At most medical facilities it can take days to get an appointment, as the surgeon is busier than most people realize.

Should My Child See a Nurse Practitioner?

Pediatric NPs are capable of delivering much the health care that kids require, consulting doctors and specialists when necessary. Educating the child and the family about the normal growth and development issues that arise in childhood.

A resident has completed both college and medical school and has undertaken further specialized training in a given area of medicine, such as orthopaedic surgery.

All physicians and surgeons must complete a residency program before practicing medicine as a board certified physician.

The faculty members at SIU have dedicated themselves to teaching and guiding residents during this specialized training.

What is the role of residents in my care?

Residents are always under the supervision of faculty surgeons during their rigorous training in surgical technique and patient management.

In orthopaedic surgery, the residency training consists of 1 year of rotations through the various surgery specialties, while under the direction of orthopaedics.

During their remaining 4 years of orthopaedic surgery training, residents are involved in the learning of upper extremity, spine, orthopaedic trauma, foot and ankle, adult reconstruction, oncology, pediatric orthopaedics, sports medicine and orthopaedic research.

They are given increased responsibility in patient care as they progress through their 3rd, 4th and 5th years of training.

The SIU faculty monitors residents closely and foster increased levels of patient involvement including initial examinations and evaluations, surgeries and follow up care.

X-ray

X-ray roomImaging is a necessary part of the practice of orthopaedic medicine.  Patients are oftentimes expected to complete an X-ray as part of the office visit.  This can sometimes make an appointment run longer than traditional doctor’s appointments.  Every effort is made to streamline this process.  X-ray is offered at both our adult and pediatric facilities.

These X-rays are hospital based.  Therefore, you will receive a bill from Memorial Medical Center or St. John’s Hospital for the X-ray and radiology reading.
