The mission of the SIU School of Medicine’s Department of Orthopaedics is to be a leader in education, research and comprehensive patient care.
The Department of Orthopaedics participates in the overall educational mission of the SIU School of Medicine by contributing orthopaedic and rehabilitation medicine expertise to undergraduate, graduate and medical students and continuing medical education programs. We inspire and train the experts of tomorrow, through a residency program which draws the highest quality of students.
We provide opportunities and encouragement for faculty, staff, residents, and students to advance their careers in this field, while providing an environment supportive of teamwork, communication and collaboration with other individuals and organizations.
An evolving research program further enhances our dedication to education and patient care. Our department’s participation in clinical trials, such as a study of the VerSys Hip System, the Cormet 2000 Metal on Metal Resurfacing Hip System and the NexGen Complete Knee Solution are just a few examples of our ongoing commitment to improve our mission through evidence-based knowledge. This research keeps us on the cutting edge of the latest procedures. The resurfacing hip system, for example, is not available in the U.S. outside of clinical trails. Our participation in the trial allows us to offer this option to our patients.
Our professional staff forms a complete and comprehensive team to address all our patients’ needs. The SIU School of Medicine’s orthopaedic team treats injuries or ailments including sports-related injuries, those involving the spine, arm, hand, leg and knee and other upper and lower extremities, as well as arthritis and emergencies. We provide you with a full service one-stop center to evaluate and treat your specific medical needs.
Specialty areas include: diabetic foot and ankle clinic, neuromotor clinic, pediatrics, upper extremity, amputee clinic, orthopaedic oncology, joint reconstruction, joint preservation, spine, trauma, fracture care and sports medicine/arthroscopy. The addition of two new faculty members this year, specializing in pediatrics and the upper extremity, demonstrates our department’s commitment to excellence through expansion of our department’s specialized health care.
