An increasing trend in research productivity within the Department of Surgery, Division of orthopaedics has occurred since 2005. Although a large number of presentations were made at national meetings in past years, finalizing the research process in the form of peer-reviewed manuscripts was not completed.
Since 2005, the Division has worked hard to increase the number of papers produced by the Orthopaedic faculty and increase the participation of residents in the publication process. Further, residents are encouraged to present their research at regional and national meetings.
With the addition of Dr. Khaled J Saleh as Chair in July 2009 and his wealth of research experience and collaborators, we expect the increasing trend in publications to continue as well as expansion of scholarly activity within the division, faculty and orthopaedic residents.
The Orthopaedic Surgery residents and faculty have significantly increased both the quantity and quality of their research. The primary purpose for resident involvement in orthopaedic research is to provide the resident with practical research experiences that enhance their understanding of scientific methodology and improve their critical thinking and analytical skills. Research activities support the delivery of high quality care and provide patients with alternative treatment options not widely available while ensuring the highest quality of education available to SIU SOM students, residents and faculty. Although the resident research requirements are that each resident must complete at least one primary clinical or basic science research project during their 5 year residency program, submit a completed manuscript to a peer-review journal prior to completing their final academic year, and collaborate on two additional research studies, most residents strive to go above and beyond the basic requirements.
The SIU SOM faculty and research staff promotes a positive and supported research environment. As such, SIU SOM Orthopaedic Surgery has and will continue to transform into one of the top care providers in the country.
