  • SIU Med School Offers Seminar on Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Treatment Options
A free evening seminar about treatment options to help people suffering from the symptoms of lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) will be presented by an orthopaedic spine surgeon from Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine.  It will be held at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, November 19, at the Dove Conference Center at St. John’s Hospital, 619 E. Mason Street, Springfield.

Dr. Per Freitag, associate professor of orthopaedics with SIU, will present options for LSS which is the most common reason for back surgery in people over the age of 65 in the United States.  It is a sometimes painful condition caused by a gradual narrowing of the spinal canal.  This narrowing can impinge and put pressure on the nerve roots and spinal cord, causing pain and discomfort.  Patients with lumbar spinal stenosis often notice pain in the buttocks or a “pins and needles” sensation in the thigh or leg that occurs when standing or walking.

“SIU is pleased to offer a minimally invasive treatment option for people who otherwise face a life of decreased activity which can lead to obesity and depression,” Freitag said.

For more information, call Sue at 217-545-7133 weekdays.  Light refreshments will be offered.  Registration is encouraged but not required.
