Goals and Characteristics

Those completing this fellowship will be able to assess and treat patients with spinal injuries, spinal deformity, degenerative conditions and rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injuries. Two fellowship trained community spine surgeons also actively participate in the program to give the fellow an experience in the private practice of spine surgery. Treating inpatients and outpatients, the fellow will be able to develop his or her competence in patient management of all spinal problems. The fellows will gain the experience in surgical reconstructive procedures for injuries, deformities, degenerative and painful disease conditions of the spine. The fellows are appointed as an instructor on the faculty and will be responsible for the evaluation, admission, surgical procedures, and day-to-day management of the spinal patients under the direction of the participating surgeons. During the course of training, fellows have an increasing responsibility for patient management. The fellows will gain expertise in surgical procedures, including endoscopic and minimally invasive approaches to the spine in addition to traditional anterior and posterior approaches of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. In addition to these clinical activities, the fellows participate in the education of our orthopedic residents. In that capacity they will supervise residents and participate in the educational activities in the orthopaedic residency program. Research in clinical or basic science is encouraged, but not required, for the completion of the program. Fellows must obtain an Illinois license and must be accepted on the staff at the affiliated hospital.
