Brief Bio

Dr. Sandra Ettema, Assistant Professor of Surgery, specializes in laryngology which focuses on treating disorders of the larynx and voice.  She also enjoys treating pediatric patients with head and neck issues and patients with head and neck cancer.  Her general otolaryngology practice focuses on treating conditions, including disorders of the thyroid, sleep apnea and sleep disorders, sinusitis, and speech and swallowing disorders. 

Prior to joining SIU, Ettema completed a fellowship in laryngology at SIU (2008) under the direction of Dr. Gayle Woodson. She completed her residency in otolaryngology (2007) at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Ettema earned her medical degree through the Medical Scholars Program (2002) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign while simultaneously completing a PhD (1999) and Master’s (1993) in speech and hearing science. She graduated with honors with a degree in speech and hearing science from the University of Illinois (1991).

Prior to joining SIU and completing her medical training, Dr. Ettema was an instructor and research assistant at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the Department of Speech and Hearing Science.  Dr. Ettema also has extensive experience as a speech-language pathologist in which she treated patients with speech, swallowing, and voice disorders as well as treating head and neck cancer patients requiring alaryngeal speech rehabilitation.

Dr. Ettema is a member of several professional societies related to her field including the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association, and American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.  Her research interests include voice and swallowing disorders, sleep disorders, and cleft palate speech and swallowing.

The fellowship program in Laryngology involves 1 year of evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with diseases of the ear, nose, and throat specifically focusing on those patients with disorders of the larynx and voice.  It also involves research experience, attending grand rounds, teaching the residents and presenting at various conferences locally, statewide, and nationally.  Patients are treated at St. John’s Medical Center and Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.
