The Center for Hearing and Balance is a full service Audiology facility committed to serving central and downstate Illinois in the comprehensive care of hearing, tinnitus, and balance disorders. We are part of the Division of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery located at St. John's Pavilion.
There are six professionals specializing in infant, pediatric, adult, and geriatric hearing evaluation, hearing handicap/communication assessment, evaluation and fitting of hearing aids, and rehabilitation, as well as, balance and dizziness evaluation and treatment. Our services are provided in conjunction with the otolaryngologists (Ear, Nose, and Throat Doctors) at SIU School of Medicine. Referrals are also accepted from other physicians and professionals.

We are also associated with the St. John's Hospital Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program.

The Hearing and Balance Center proudly announces the addition of the Cochlear Implant Program to the services offered for the deaf and hard of hearing. Cochlear implants are indicated for use by adults and children over 1 year of age who have significant hearing loss that is not effectively treated with conventional hearing aids.

Our Mission

The SIU Center for Hearing and Balance was established as a full-service clinic specializing in the diagnosis and rehabilitation of hearing and vestibular disorders. We will provide quality comprehensive audiologic services, including diagnostic hearing assessments, hearing loss counseling and rehabilitation, advanced hearing aid fittings and service, balance testing and vestibular rehabilitation to a diverse patient population.

We are committed to our goal is to improve the quality of life of our clients though state-of-the art technology and diagnostic testing. We will treat each patient with empathetic care and integrity to help preserve preservation of personal autonomy of our clients.

At the SIU Center for Hearing and Balance, hearing loss is tested and treated using the latest advances in medical technology. Our health care team includes nurses, otolaryngologists (ear, nose and throat physicians), and licensed and certified audiologists, all of whom are specially trained to identify hearing disorders and determine the best treatment for a given patient. The team works very closely with the primary physician to ensure quality and continuity of care.

Evaluation of Hearing Disorders

Using state-of-the-art equipment, we are able to test even newborn infant infants. Our patients range from newborns to adults of all ages with a wide array of auditory disorders. As an advanced tertiary care center, we are able to provide services to patients with all types of hearing disorders. Among the special auditory diagnostic services available to patients at the SIU Center for Hearing and Balance are Auditory Evoked Potential testing and Otoacoustic Emissions. These procedures can diagnose the degree of hearing loss in infants, young children and difficult-to-test patients who cannot be evaluated using conventional procedures. Through our specialized testing, the function of specific hearing structures is evaluated to ensure a more precise diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
In addition to auditory testing, the audiologists at the SIU Audiology Center counsel patients regarding various devices that are available to improve communication for hearing impaired individuals at home, on the telephone and in the community.

Hearing Aid Program

We carry a full range of hearing aids at very competitive prices. Hearing aids include completely in the canal hearing aids (CICs) which are virtually invisible when worn, and the very advanced programmable and digital hearing aids. These hearing aids can constantly sample sound in the environment and automatically set the volume to your most comfortable listening level. If someone whispers, the hearing aid turns it up, if a baby cries, it turns it down. These hearing aids also allow maximum sound clarity and noise reduction.
These hearing aids can also carry different programs. Therefore, if you need one program for listening in quiet and another program that cuts background noise for listening in the car, the hearing aids can be reset at the push of a button. All hearing aids have a 30 working day return policy.
All of our hearing aid services are personally provided by the audiologists who have at least a master's degree in audiology and Illinois licenses.
