Leona Burnham is a clinical instructor in the Division of General Surgery at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. In her current role as Clinical Nurse Specialist for Pediatric Surgery, she provides case coordination and management for the patients and families seeking care from the pediatric surgery team. Her clinical interests are gastrostomy tubes, central venous lines, wound care, and patient/family education.
She received her diploma in nursing from Blessing Hospital School of Nursing in Quincy, IL and completed a Bachelor of Science Degree at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. She earned a master’s degree in Nursing from Loyola University of Chicago.
She is a Certified Pediatric Nurse by the National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Nurses. Her professional experience includes general pediatrics, pediatric intensive care, and pediatric home care in the roles of staff nurse, charge nurse, discharge planner, staff education, and case management. She is a member of the American Pediatric Surgical Nurses Association, the Society of Pediatric Nurses and the Illinois Society of Advanced Practice Nurses.
