Burn care, reconstruction and therapy is offered through Memorial Medical Center’s Regional Burn Center, one of only six units in the state of Illinois, serving both central and southern Illinois. Through the center and on an outpatient basis, more than 200 patients are seen annually for all types of burns. There is a multidisciplinary team approach to burn care and the plastic surgeons at SIU are a critical part of that and continue to offer care on an outpatient basis.
We offer reconstructive procedures including skin grafting and therapy to the burn patient at any point in their recovery. They are often transferred from critical access facilities to the Regional Burn Center for more comprehensive care and management. Reconstructive procedures are often staged over several weeks, months or even years. This includes addressing burn contracture scars.
Physical and/or occupational therapy is often the key to a burn patient’s ability to return to life following a significant burn injury. Both are offered through Memorial Medical Center.
Patients with burns may be evaluated and treated through our outpatient wound center or at the Institute for Plastic Surgery.
