The plastic surgery faculty are responsible for the education and training of medical students (undergraduates), residents and fellows.
As a division in the Department of Surgery. Plastic Surgery shares the teaching of the surgery curriculum with seven other divisions: general surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics, otolaryngology, thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, and urology.

The ten-week surgery clerkship is an integrated, multi-disciplinary clinical experience that introduces students to basic principles of surgery and related problems. Its curriculum is defined by learning objectives and encompasses inpatient-hospital and outpatient-office experiences. During each half of the clerkship, students simultaneously evaluate and follow patients from four surgical disciplines.
Functioning as members of the patient-care team, they learn pre-operative and post-operative evaluation and management and participate in surgical procedures.

Daily rounds and weekly seminars with faculty give students an opportunity to discuss patient problems in detail. Faculty mentors provide students with regular feedback, advice and direction.
A lecture and discussion series on critical problems is used to help students strengthen psychosocial skills. Classroom teaching and supervised ward practice help students acquire needed technical ward skills.
Elective courses in each major surgical specialties are available to seniors interested in acquiring additional knowledge and skills.

Brian Derby, M.D.
Where are you from? - Fort Lauderdale, FL. Yes, 2007 was my first introduction
to what they call snow.
What brought you to SIU? - I would call it a gut feeling. I left the interview
thinking everything, but the snow, fits me perfectly. The feel, my seniors, the
faculty (with their tireless committment to my education and effort to check on
my well-being), and now, experience in the program show me I am right where I
need to be. I can deal with the snow.
What is you area of interest/research? - What is your area of interest/research? Broad right now. Hand, tendon healing, and lower extremity trauma. The list continues to grow. With four dedicated hours of faculty guided discussion a week, in addition to lecture by Dr. Neumeister for the junior residents once weekly, topics abound.
