The Laboratory for Tissue Engineering and Advanced Biomaterials at Southern Illinois University is headed by Dr. Saadiq El-Amin. Tissue engineering is emerging as a potential solution to many high demand tissue and organ transplantations as well as a multitude of other cutting edge applications including drug delivery and biomaterials formulation. The Tissue Engineering Lab at SIU has a dual focus on both regenerative medicine (tendon, bone and ligament) and tissue engineering projects. The Laboratory for Tissue Engineering and Advanced Biomaterials includes a polymer synthesis laboratory, a tissue culture laboratory, office space as well as a future imaging laboratory.

Within the scope of the lab’s work, the improvement or replacement of biological functions is accomplished through the use of cells, engineering and materials methods, and suitable biochemical and physio-chemical factors. Current and future projects with which the lab is involved include collaborations with the departments of orthopaedics, OBGYN, Plastic Surgery, Cardiology, Oncology, Medical Microbiology, Immunology & Cell Biology and Electrical & Computer Engineering/Biomedical Engineering Program.
