Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate. The typical prostate is the size of a walnut. As men age, it increases in size and can grow into the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body, and can cause urinary and bladder symptoms.
Some common symptoms men report are straining to start urine flow, weak urine stream, need to urinate two or more times at night, inability to urinate or dribbling at the end of urination. Several treatments can cure this problem.
Often when patients discuss their BPH symptoms with their provider, oral medication is given to them to see if it will help. There are several pills that can either help shrink the prostate or help you urinate better. Most medications take a few weeks to start working, but some men can notice symptom improvement prior to that. If medication treatment fails, surgical treatment can become an option. TURP, which stands for transurethral resection of the prostate, is a treatment offered for BPH. This procedure is performed through a cystoscopic approach under general anesthesia and typically takes up to an hour.
A cystoscope is inserted through the penis up to the level of the prostate. This allows visualization of the prostate tissue and surrounding structures. A wire-looped instrument is inserted through the scope and the surgeon carefully cuts away the tissue and cauterizes the remaining tissue to minimize bleeding. This process removes the prostate tissue that is blocking the urethra. A Foley catheter is inserted and attached to a continuous bladder irrigation system.
You will have a hospital stay of one to three days for recovery. Typically, the catheter is removed before you leave the hospital.
