Dr. Shaheen Alanee, Assistant Professor of Surgery, is a Urologic Oncologist who specializes in minimally invasive urologic oncology (robotic surgery of bladder, prostate, and kidney cancers), advanced open pelvic cancer surgery, management of localized prostate cancer with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), management of advanced prostate cancer, and surgery of advanced kidney and testicular cancers (retroperitoneal lymph node dissection). He is Head of Urologic Oncology for SIU School of Medicine’s Division of Urology and maintains a clinical practice at the Simmons Cancer Institute in Springfield, Illinois.

Dr. Alanee completed a urologic oncology clinical fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He completed residency training in urology at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He also earned a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology and Global Health at Emory University in Atlanta.

Dr. Alanee has clinical and research interests in prostate cancer. He developed the capabilities of MRI of the prostate in Springfield in conjunction with St. John’s hospital. He received special training in reading MRI images of the prostate, and has the most extensive experience in MRI targeted biopsy of the prostate in central and southern Illinois. He continues to develop the process of MRI targeted biopsy of the prostate and will soon start computerized prostate biopsy using state of the art technology to provide even more accurate methods of diagnosing prostate cancer. Dr. Alanee's clinical research interest also includes focal therapy of prostate cancer.

He is currently investigating the association of DNA changes with response to chemotherapy in bladder cancer through a large grant from the Memorial Medical Center Foundation. He also has research interests in immunotherapy of high risk superficial bladder cancer.

Dr. Alanee is a member of the American Urological Association, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Society of Human Genetics. He has presented nationally and has written several papers in peer reviewed journals.
