The Division of Urology is extremely proud to announce that Dr. Bradley Schwartz was recently promoted to Colonel in the United States Army. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Schwartz on this promotion which is truly a remarkable achievement. Attaining the rank of Colonel is an outstanding achievement made by less than one of every eight Lt Colonels from an already select pool of individuals. The Division of Urology is very proud of Dr. Schwartz for this achievement and his service to our country.
Dr. Kevin T. McVary has accepted the position of Division of Urology Division Chairman. He will be joining the division in January 2013.
The 8th Annual SIU Mens Night Out event was a rousing success. Dr. Andrew Varney, Dr. Tobias Köhler and Dr. Bradley Schwartz presented talks on a variety of men’s health topics. The men’s health event featured St. Louis Cardinal Manager Mike Matheny, commenting on his first year as the manager and answering questions from the audience.
Dr. Tobias Köhler has been named to the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Tobias Köhler was awarded the Faculty Teacher Of The Year for 2012. Several Urology Residents were awarded teaching awards for the Academic Year ending in June 2012. These awards are made based on the quality of the evaluations by medical students & by other residents. Those residents receiving awards are Nathaly François, Luke Frederick, Thomas Frye, Bradford Stevenson, Eric Taylor and Herbert Wiser.
The Urology Nursing Society, Inc is presenting a two day educational event for working nurses in Madison, Wisconsin November 8 & 9. The goals of the conference are to present advanced education for working nurses in urological care and nursing practice in general. Please call (302) 424-2211 for information about this event.
Sarah Smysor, Urology Medical Assistant, has been recently recognized with a “Caught In the Act of Excellence” award. Sarah went above and beyond her role when she assisted a patient obtaining a free supply of a medication from a manufacture. The patient is elderly and on a limited income and unable to afford medication. Sarah demonstrated commitment, compassion, dedication and she is an example of the care that SIU Urology provides to patients. Congratulations Sarah!

The following residents are being recognized for their success at the North Central Section meeting of the American Urological Association conference that took place in Chicago, Illinois October 10th thru 13th.
Thomas Frye spoke on Erectile Dysfunction
Casey Lythgoe presented a talk on hypogonadism and also presented a video on VV Fistulae.
Brad Stevenson presented a basic science talk on prostate seed coatings.
Eric Taylor gave a presentation on reflux.
Joe Wiser and Luke Frederick gave poster presentations on penile implantation techniques.
In news relating to SIU Faculty attending the conference, Dr. Tobias Köhler sat in on an expert panel discussing Mens Health issues. Dr. Bradley Schwartz stepped down as the Illinois Representative to the Board of Directors.
