Dr. Sapan Desai is an Assistant Professor of Vascular Surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (SIU). Dr. Desai completed his undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, followed by a Ph.D. in anatomy and cell biology, and medical degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. He then completed five years of general surgery training at Duke University in Durham, NC, where he remained on the faculty for the next three years. During this time, he completed an MBA in Healthcare Management at Western Governors University in Salt Lake City, UT, followed by a fellowship in vascular surgery at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, TX.

Dr. Desai has held numerous professional positions, including executive editor for the Journal of Surgical Radiology, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Progressive Science, and Chief Executive Officer of Surgisphere Corporation, a medical education company. Dr. Desai is presently the Director of the Quality Alliance and Predictive Analysis at Memorial Medical Center, and Director of the SIU Vein Clinic. He is the author of more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific articles, the editor of more than 30 medical textbooks, and a reviewer for multiple scientific journals. His most recent textbooks include the Clinical Review of Vascular Surgery, the Clinical Review of Vascular Trauma, and Phlebology, Vein Surgery, and Ultrasonography.

In addition to a robust clinical practice, Dr. Desai has an active research practice. His research interests include improving clinical outcomes after surgery, raising the quality of patient care and clinical processes, development of a new drug that helps to eradicate fatty buildup within arteries, and medical education. Dr. Desai has received multiple professional awards including two National Institutes of Health grant awards for his research, and numerous awards by professional societies.  He is a sought-after panel expert for prominent groups such as the Association for Program Directors in Vascular Surgery.

Dr. Desai specializes in all aspects of arterial and venous reconstructive surgery and endovascular therapy, including the diagnosis and management of cerebrovascular disease, arterial occlusive disease, aortic aneurysms, thoracic outlet syndrome, and dialysis access. He also treats the full spectrum of cosmetic venous disease through vein ablations and sclerotherapy.
