Dr. Kim J. Hodgson graduated summa cum laude from Rutgers University in 1977 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biochemistry. He received his medical training at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1981 and completed his General Surgery training in Albany, New York in 1986. This included a year abroad in Great Britain where, in addition to caring for patients, he participated in research in non-invasive vascular diagnostic techniques. Dr. Hodgson received advanced training in Vascular Surgery at SIU, after which he joined the SIU Division of Vascular Surgery in 1987. He was promoted to Professor and Chairman of the Division of Vascular Surgery at SIU in 1998 and served as director of the SIU Vascular Surgery Fellowship training program from 1998 to 2010. Dr. Hodgson serves as the Medical Director of the David S. Sumner Vascular Laboratory at Memorial Medical Center, as he has since 1987, and also as the Medical Director of the St. John’s Hospital Vascular Laboratory. In 2009 Dr. Hodgson was honored by being awarded the David S. Sumner Endowed Chair in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery.
Dr. Hodgson’s area of special interest pertains to the minimally-invasive endovascular therapies to treat vascular disease without the previously required major surgery, such as endovascular aortic aneurysm repair, carotid stenting, and balloon angioplasty of PVD. He has published over 100 articles in medical journals, as well as more than 35 book chapters on vascular surgery topics including carotid artery disease, lower extremity arterial disease, aortic aneurysms, non-invasive vascular evaluation, endovascular therapies, thrombolysis, and many others. Dr. Hodgson has been the principal investigator of numerous clinical investigational trials of new devices, drugs, and techniques to treat patients with peripheral vascular disease, including endovascular abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysm repair, carotid stenting, thrombolysis, and arterial stenting. His endovascular expertise has led to his serving as a consultant to numerous medical device companies, to his invitation to speak at numerous national and international medical meetings, and to his authorship of nationally recognized multi-specialty training and credentialing guidelines related to the endovascular therapies.
Dr. Hodgson recently completed a six year term on the Vascular Surgery Board, which is a select group of Vascular Surgeons who write and administer the examinations required to obtain Board Certification in Vascular Surgery. He is a past-president of the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery and Editor of the Vascular Surgery Education and Self-Assessment Program, which is a continuously updated compilation of test questions which all United States vascular surgeons must successfully complete every three years in order to maintain their Board Certification in Vascular Surgery. He has chaired and served on numerous national and international vascular surgery society committees, on the Editorial Board of numerous vascular surgery journals, and regularly critiques manuscripts for all of the major vascular surgery journals.
