Brief Bio

Dr. Kim Hodgson is Professor and Chairman of the Division of Vascular Surgery at Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine. He graduated summa cum laude from Rutgers University in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry, and received his medical training at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, graduating in 1981. His general surgery residency in Albany, New York, included a year of study in Great Britain where, in addition to caring for patients, he participated in research in the non-invasive vascular laboratory. Upon completion of his general surgery residency in 1986, he undertook fellowship training in Vascular Surgery at SIU, after which he joined the SIU Division of Vascular Surgery in 1987 as an Assistant Professor, rising through the ranks and ultimately being promoted to Professor and Chairman in 1998. Dr. Hodgson currently serves as the director of the Non-Invasive Vascular Lab, Endovascular Therapy Program, and Vascular Surgery Fellowship programs at SIU.

Dr. Hodgson’s area of special interest is in the endovascular therapies, which he adopted early in their evolution. He has published numerous articles in medical journals, as well as numerous book chapters on vascular surgery topics including carotid artery disease, lower extremity arterial disease, aortic aneurysms, vascular laboratory evaluation, endovascular therapies, thrombolysis, and many others. Dr. Hodgson has been an investigator in numerous clinical investigational trials of new devices and drugs to treat patients with peripheral vascular disease, including endovascular aortic aneurysm repair, carotid angioplasty, thrombolysis, and arterial stenting. His endovascular expertise has led to him serving as a consultant to numerous medical device companies and to his invitation to speak at numerous medical meetings.

Dr. Hodgson is the chairman of the Society for Vascular Surgery’s (SVS) Endovascular Issues Committee, chairman of the SVS Education Council, and a member of the SVS Program Committee. He serves on the Vascular Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery and on the American Board of Vascular Surgery. Dr. Hodgson is on the Editorial Board of the journal Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and regularly reviews manuscripts for all of the major vascular surgery journals. He also serves on the numerous committees of several other national and regional vascular surgery societies.

Recently elected to the American Board of Vascular Surgery and the Vascular Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Hodgson has been SIU’s vascular surgery chair since 1998. A recent past president of the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, Dr. Hodgson directs the Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy fellowship training programs at SIU and is active in researching new drugs and devices to treat patients with both aneurysms and blockages of their arteries and veins. Dr.Hodgson’s previous research endeavors have contributed to the development of minimally invasive means of treating life-threatening aneurysms and injuries of the thoracic and abdominal aorta; of preventing stroke through carotid angioplasty and stenting for those with suitable anatomy and with carotid endarterectomy for those better suited for that approach; and of catheters and drugs designed to dissolve clot in arteries and veins to prevent the need for amputation or the development of chronic debilitating leg wounds. Dr. Hodgson was recently appointed Editor in Chief of the Society for Vascular Surgery’s Vascular Education and Self-Assessment Program, an educational program designed to aid vascular surgeons in practice in the pursuit of staying up to date with the rapidly evolving diagnostic and therapeutic techniques to address patients with vascular disease.
