Dr. Robert McLafferty serves as Professor in the Division of Vascular Surgery within the Department of Surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Dr. McLafferty earned his undergraduate degree in biology from Boston College in 1986 and his medical degree in 1990 from the University of Vermont.  He completed his internship, residency in general surgery and fellowship in vascular surgery at Oregon Health Sciences University in 1998.

Dr. McLafferty is certified by the American Board of Surgery in General and Vascular Surgery.  He offers evaluation and treatment in all areas of peripheral vascular diseases. This includes such problems as: peripheral arterial disease; carotid disease; aneurysm disease; vein and lymphatic diseases; chronic wound problems; and dialysis access management. Dr. McLafferty offers treatments for these conditions that can include medical options, endovascular (less invasive) options such as with catheters, balloons or stents, or open surgery options.

Dr. McLafferty is nationally renowned for his research and experience in many areas of vascular disease. He actively participates in the education of other vascular surgeons on the care of patients with vascular disease throughout the United States through many professional organizations. He has published numerous peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters on a variety of vascular disease topics. He is also the Medical Director of the St. John’s Hospital Regional Wound Care Center in Springfield, Illinois.

Dr. McLafferty remains a strong patient advocate and works with his team to emphasize a caring nature and effective communication at all levels.He works to help patients truly understand their condition and makes every effort to get them involved with improving their vascular problems.
