Hints for Slide CRR 04.

  • Hopefully, you have recognized that the bulk of this specimen consists of skeletal muscle, with individual fibers cut in cross section.
    • You should also be able to find some nerves within the specimen.  (There is even a muscle spindle.)

  • The two long surfaces of this specimen are covered by serous membranes (i.e., mesothelium supported by connective tissue).
    • Mesothelium is very delicate, easily damaged by handling.  It is only visible here and there along these surfaces.

  • Note that cross-sectioned muscle fibers of this specimen indicate that the shape of this muscle is a flat sheet (rather than, say, a tapered cylinder).

  • Where in the human body can you find a sheet of skeletal muscle with a serosal surface on either side?
    • (Hint:  It helps with breathing.)

No more hints.
