Astrocytes in cerebral cortex

In this image, green color represents astrocytes (astroglia) with their processes.  The dark "shadows" are locations of neuron cell bodies.
This field of view clearly reveals the abundance of astrocytes in the brain, and how thoroughly neuropil is infiltrated by astrocytic processes.

[Astrocytes are visualized through expression of green fluorescent protein (GFP) in a transgenic mouse, postnatal day 7, cerebral cortex.  Image from GENSAT (Gene Expression Nervous System Atlas).]
