A critical focus of national policy discussion both going into and coming out of the presidential election has been the future of health care reform and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) – popularly known as Obamacare. Six years after the passage of the ACA, physicians and other health providers, as well as insurers, and employers, have all invested in substantial changes as the ACA has been implemented. With the November election, the Republican Party took control of Congress and the White House. As anticipated, the Republicans soon introduced their replacement plan for the ACA, the American Health Care Act (AHCA).
Just as the ACA dramatically impacted physicians, whatever may follow it will likely further disrupt health care providers and their patients in numerous ways. To that end, the 2017 Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH)/Southern Illinois University (SIU) Health Policy Institute aims to bring together a panoply of speakers form multiple sectors and a range of viewpoints to explore the issues in a way that goes beyond the strongly held political positions that have captured the media attention.
