Thyroid Disease

The thyroid gland is a small butterfly shaped gland that sits over the windpipe or trachea in the neck. A group of diseases, ranging from benign to malignant, can affect thyroid gland. The evaluation of the thyroid requires the use of ultrasound, which is conveniently performed in our clinic. Ultrasounds can reveal a normal thyroid, Graves', Disease, Hashimoto's thyroidtisthyroid nodules, thyroid cysts, or thyroid cancers. Sometimes a biopsy of the tissue is required to tell if a nodule is benign or malignant. This biopsy is also done in our clinic using ultrasound and a very small needle to take a tissue sample. A variety of diseases can occur in the thyroid, including:

  • Nodules
  • Thyroid Cancer
    • Adult
    • Pediatric
  • Autoimmune Thyroid Disease
    • Graves’ Disease
    • Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

 

Thyroid Surgery

Sometimes surgery is required in the management of thyroid disease. Surgery can be necessary for a variety of reasons including enlarged thyroid gland, overactive thyroid gland (Graves’ Disease) thyroid nodule, and thyroid cancer. Surgeries for the thyroid include:

  • Lobectomy
  • Total Thyroidectomy
  • Neck Dissection to remove lymph nodes for Thyroid Cancer

 

 

Safety in Thyroid Surgery

Given the unique and complex anatomy around they thyroid certain structures are monitored during surgery. During surgery, special procedures utilized to help with safety, including:

  • Nerve Monitoring (recurrent laryngeal nerve)
  • Parathyroid hormone (PTH) monitoring
