April 5, 2021

Traves Crabtree, MD, has been named chief of SIU Medicine's Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Crabtree is a professor and medical director of SIU's Surgical Skills Laboratory in the Memorial Center for Learning and Innovation. Dr. Crabtree is an alumnus of SIU School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville and cardiothoracic surgery fellowships at UVMC and Washington University in St. Louis.

Dr. Crabtree's cardiothoracic surgery team is making great strides in the development of surgical programs within the division. He said, "Our current work includes developing a more advanced ECMO program and a program to guide patients through the process of lung cancer screening to improve the rate of screening in underserved areas of the region. We are also developing a robotic program for lung cancer surgery, esophageal surgery, and other surgeries within the chest."

Dr. Crabtree said he is honored to follow Dr. Stephen Hazelrigg, who has worked for many years to build an excellent program, and that he wishes to continue Dr. Hazelrigg's tradition of promoting innovative treatments for patients with emphysema in addition to continuing the successful LVRS program.
