Plastic Surgery Residency Application Process
The residency training program in plastic surgery is designed to give residents a diverse experience in plastic surgery and its subspecialty areas. Two positions per year are filled in a 6-year integrated program approved by the ACGME which involves matching through the NRMP into a program during your senior year of medical school. All applicants must submit their applications through the ERAS program (https://apps.aamc.org/myeras-web/#/landing).
Interested applicants are encouraged to rotate with the institution in a 4-week-long sub-internship during the summer months prior to submitting applications. Southern Illinois University School of Medicine participates in the Visiting Students Application Service (VSAS) through the AAMC. More information about a visiting rotation can be found in the separate "Rotate with SIU Institute for Plastic Surgery" link.
Your Application should include:
- the ERAS application
- personal statement
- medical school transcripts
- a minimum of 3-letters of recommendation
- Dean’s letter and copies of your USMLE scores.
We comply with the standard letter of recommendation form used for NRMP plastic surgery match produced by ACAPS (https://www.aamc.org/download/298290/data/plastics_lor.pdf)
Every applicant will be sent a supplemental application. Failure to fill out the supplemental application will significantly diminish the likelihood of being offerred an interview. We are genuinely interested in your thoughts regarding our program.
The cohesion of the residents with eachother as well as with the faculty and the community are what make this program incredibly unique. Please take the time to fill this out thoughtfully and completely. We would not ask this of you, during a very busy time, if we did not believe it to be critical.
All foreign graduates should submit a copy of your ECFMG certificate. SIU School of Medicine accepts J-1 Visa’s only. In order for you to be considered for interview, all of the required information must be submitted by the designated deadline. The program code for our program is:
|Southern Illinois University Program||3621621030|
Applicants chosen for an interview will be notified by e-mail. Interview dates are given on a first-come, first-serve for date preference. Each date does have a limited number of interview spots. Historically, applicants who have rotated with the Institute for Plastic Surgery and have performed well are invited back for an interview at the time of other interviews.
