Student Electives

Ambulatory Care

Description: Student will see patients at Family Medicine Center in Carbondale and at one of the satellite clinics nine half-days per week. Other time will be spent in conference or in individually designed activities including home visits, nursing home visits, special clinics, etc.

Objectives:

Experience outpatient medicine.
Understand the importance of outpatient care.
Develop skills in outpatient problem management as performed by a physician and ancillary staff.

Evaluation:

Completed through observation of and discussion with the student on an ongoing basis, and an evaluation with the attending physician at the end of the rotation.

Prerequisites:

Successful completion of all third-year clerkships.

Student to contact Dr. Malone at least ONE MONTH before beginning elective
Enrollment:
Maximum number of students - one per experience
Schedule: Two (2) or four (4) weeks; full-time
Credit Hours: 2.0 - 4.0 clinical credits awarded


Family Medicine Subinternship

Description: Student will serve as a subintern at the Family Medicine Center. The student will do admission H&P's and follow patients in the hospital. The student will take call as assigned with one of the Family Medicine residents.

Objectives:

  1. Experience the full range of family medicine in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

  2. Develop skills in outpatient problem management.

  3. Increase skills in diagnosis and management of inpatient problems.

  4. Develop skills in outpatient and inpatient procedures, such as laceration repair, colposcopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, etc.

Evaluation:

Evaluation will be done through observation of and discussion with the student on an ongoing basis, with one case presentation at chart rounds during the month, and an evaluation with the attending physician at the end of the rotation.

Prerequisites:

Successful completion of all clerkships.

Enrollment: Maximum number of students - one per experience
Schedule: Two (2) or four (4) weeks; full-time
(Monday through Sunday)
Credit Hours: 2.0 - 4.0 clinical credits awarded
