Research Assistant Professor (SMS-3037)

Position Function: This position will have knowledge and practical skills in research related to Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia. This faculty member will have the knowledge and expertise to develop an externally funded research program focusing on Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders that is synergistic with the current research programs at Dale and Deborah Smith Center for Alzheimer’s Research and trEatment (CARE). This faculty member will supervise and conduct research and advanced training in relevant topics, teach basic neuroscience topics, and participate in faculty affairs at the school, the department, and CARE.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Neuroscience or related field, experience in research with demonstration of likely success as an independent investigator. This includes a robust publication track record in areas of investigation relevant to the mission of CARE. Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations.

Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology (SMS-3032)

Position Function: This position will have knowledge and practical skills in the diagnosis and care of patients with dementia. This faculty member will provide specialized care for patients with dementia and related disorders and will be responsible for teaching the discipline to medical students and residents. The faculty member will have knowledge and experience to be the Medical Director of Dale and Deborah Smith Center for Alzheimer’s Research and trEatment (CARE). The faculty member will also be expected to develop a research program in translational science in the areas of dementia and neurodegenerative disease.

Minimum Qualifications: Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations. Board eligible or board certified in neurology and completion of at least one year of fellowship training or equivalent experience in dementia or behavioral neurology, including experience in translational research. Clinical and Academic accomplishments appropriate for appointment as Associate Professor.

Desired Qualifications: The successful candidate will be a licensed physician and neurologist with special expertise in dementia and/or behavioral neurology, and a strong record of research productivity.

Assistant or Associate Professor and Director of Community Engagement (SMS-2923)

Position Function: The Dale and Deborah Smith Center for Alzheimer’s Research and trEatment (CARE) resides within the Department of Neurology and the Neuroscience Institute (NSI) at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (SIU SOM). The area of Community Engagement covers research, education, outreach, and Beyond the Medical Center programs. CARE Community Engagement works closely with several departments within the School of Medicine, SIU’s Federally Qualified Health Centers, the CARE Memory and Aging Network, state departments and agencies and non-profit organizations. The faculty member will also function as the Director of Community Engagement and is responsible for the administration and development of research, outreach, and educational programs within CARE and the Memory and Aging Network. These programs are directed at physicians, residents, medical students, other healthcare professionals and the public, including dementia patients and their caregivers. The Director of Community Engagement may be assigned to appropriate faculty committees within the SOM and may receive other state and community appointments as they pertain to the mission and interests of CARE.

Minimum Qualifications: PhD in Sociology, Psychology, Epidemiology, Medical Anthropology, or related social/behavioral sciences or master’s degree in the same concentrations with minimum 5 years’ experience in relevant research and administration duties. Postdoctoral Fellow (SMS-2922)

Position Function: The Postdoctoral Associate will provide advanced independent and/or directed research to achieve the objectives for the Neuroscience Laboratory’s awarded NIH grants. The primary purpose of postdoctoral training is to develop new or advanced research skills, increase publication record, gain experience in scientific writing, presentation skills, and mentoring of graduate students. The laboratories study aging, Alzheimer’s disease, and related disorders in rodent models using various behavioral testing, in vivo electrochemistry, immunohistochemistry and several cellular and molecular techniques. 

Minimum Qualifications: PhD in neuroscience or a related research field. Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations.

Desired Qualifications: Preference will be given to applications with experience in rodent behavioral paradigms, stereotaxic surgery, molecular biology, or research related to neurotransmission, inflammation, or cellular senescence.
