Culinary Medicine Aims to Cook Up Nutritional Solutions

February 8, 2018
A new collaboration between the Lincoln Land Community College Culinary Institute and Southern Illinois University School of Medicine aims to blend the art of food and cooking with the science of medicine.

“Nourish: Culinary Medicine” is a series of classes that aims to educate health care professionals and learners on ways to eat better and promote healthier diets to others.

Sessions are held in the culinary labs of the LLCC Workforce Careers Center, located on the LLCC main campus, 5250 Shepherd Rd.:
  • Wine & Chocolate - March 21 (5:30-8:30 pm)
  • Mediterranean Diet - April 11 (5:30-8:30 pm)
  • Healthy Breakfast - April 21 (9 am - noon)
Culinary medicine is a new evidence-based field, according to Stacy Sattovia, MD, associate professor of internal medicine at SIU Medicine. “The goal is to help people make good personal medical decisions about eating healthier to prevent and treat disease while boosting their well-being. The focus is on educating physicians and health care professionals, giving them knowledge and skills that can translate into teachable moments in the clinic.”

Physicians frequently counsel patients on diet and exercise or refer patients to nutritionists and dietitians. More than one-third of U.S. adults are obese. Meal choices and sedentary lifestyles within the typical American household are causing increased rates of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. The stress to the U.S. health care delivery system is growing with the nation’s waistline.

Registration for Hectic Meets Healthy is $120. It includes a light breakfast, hands-on kitchen experience, lecture and lunch tasting, featuring food prepared by the entire group. Register at www.siumed.edu/cpd. (In the dropdown under ‘Learners,’ click on ‘Conferences.’)
