Specialty Tracks in Family Medicine

GERIATRICS
This area of concentration puts special emphasis on the health of seniors and will include experiences in many settings such as: Hospice, Nursing Home (both rural and urban settings) Home Visits, Falls Clinic, Memory Clinic, Anti-Coagulation Clinic and clinical rotations with Community and Faculty Physicians with large geriatric populations.

SPORTS MEDICINE
This area of concentration can be specifically designed for residents who are interested in developing their skills in the care of athletes and overall wellness. This program will be structured to elective time with family physicians board certified in sports medicine, orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, chiropractors and exercise physiologists. Injections, casting, splinting, and ultrasound (point of care) are just a few of the techniques a resident will master by the end of their residency. Becoming a local team physician is encouraged.


ACADEMIC MEDICINE
This area of concentration is tailored for residents who are interested in becoming academic family physicians. It will include components of teaching, education, research and administration. In addition, it will develop leadership skills, emphasize time management, introduce you to the organization of medical schools and hospitals and their funding mechanisms. The opportunity also exists to design a program where the resident can obtain a Master's in Public Health.

URGENT CARE / ER

  • This area of concentration is tailored for residents who are excited about being a family physician in an Urgent Care/ER setting.
  • Experiences in the Trauma Center, Urban & Rural ER Departments, Acute/Urgent Care and Fast Track Clinics, are just part of the opportunities available.


WOMEN'S HEALTH

  • Family medicine residents who love women's health can tailor their electives that can include advanced training in obstetrics if desired.
  • Competency in procedural skills such as colposcopy, LEEP, endometrial biopsies, ultrasounds and others are offered. Special electives can be chosen from the following resources. SIU Breast Clinic, SJH Mind & Body Center, SIU Maternal Fetal Medicine, Planned Parenthood, Gyne-Onc with SIU Obstetrics, Local Community Health Center, Rape Counseling, Child Abuse Exams, and Pregnancy Alternatives. Rotations with specialists in cardiology, urinary incontinence, and osteoporosis are also available.


Comprehensive Care Clinic Track (CCC)

  • Tailored for residents in their second and third years interested in serving our most socially and medically complex patients.
  • Opportunity to be a part of an interdisciplinary team including social work, pharmacy, nursing, and medicine. Learn to utilize trauma-informed care and harm reduction strategies.
  • Gain a better understanding of social determinants of health, barriers to care, motivational interviewing, and harm reduction.
  • Learn how to partner with the local police, court systems, shelters, and substance abuse treatment facilities and take patient referrals from these entities.
  • Integrate with a Medical-Legal Partner who is present in the clinic for patients with health-harming legal needs.


Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Track for Opioid Use Disorder

  • Organized for residents who are interested in treating patients with Opioid Use Disorder through our Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Clinical Program.
  • Helping provide comprehensive inter-professional care to patients who have struggled with Opioid Use Disorder. 
  • Residents will do an elective month and then continue with the team on a regular basis seeing patients in the MAT clinic twice monthly throughout their PGY2 and PGY3 years. 
  • Will have the opportunity to work with our MAT faculty providers for inpatient consults at our local hospitals. 
  • All residents will be provided the CME training for the DEA waiver to have prescribing rights for Buprenorphine. 


HOSPITAL MEDICINE TRACK

  • Designed for residents who have in hospital medicine specifically or who want additional experience with hospital medicine.
  • Will have additional rotational experiences in the hospital setting
  • 1-month with ICU Springfield Clinic service during PGY2
  • 1-month extra inpatient as senior on FMTS during PGY3
  • Will work closely with the hospitalist service director and faculty related to learning objectives, experiences, expectations.
  • Will take leadership roles on inpatient service to help support, provide education to co-residents and other learners on the team.
