Welcome to the Department of Neurology

The Department of Neurology has a mission to improve the quality of neurologic care for the population of central and southern Illinois through education, research, clinical practice and community service. Our department includes neurologists, interventional neurologists, physiatrists, gerontologists, neuroscientists, investigational pharmacists and midlevel providers.  We provide undergraduate medical education to the students of school of medicine in their core Neurology clerkship. We provide graduate medical education to the residents in the Neurology program as well as to house staff in Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, ENT and Neurosurgery.  We also provide post-graduate and continuing medical education through Neurology/Neurosurgery Grand Rounds and a variety of courses and workshops offered throughout the year. Department research covers clinical and basic neuroscience as well as patient outcomes and our faculty participate in a wide portfolio of clinical trials that provide access to cutting edge therapies for the patients of central and southern Illinois.  Neurology subspecialty care and training is available in dementia, epilepsy, movement disorders, neuromuscular disease, neuro-oncology and vascular disease at our two outpatient sites in Springfield and our two affiliated hospitals, Memorial Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital. Within the department is the Dale and Deborah Smith Center for Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment, one of three state-funded centers for dementia care, research and education and the only one outside of the Chicago area. The Parkinson’s Disease Center includes medical and surgical care and therapies for a variety of movement disorders and is closely allied with the Division of Neurosurgery for deep brain stimulation surgery and monitoring. The MDA Care Center is a multi-disciplinary clinic which serves a large population of patients with progressive and inherited neuromuscular disorders under the sponsorship of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Through partnership with Memorial Medical Center, the department of Neurology has joined with the department of Psychiatry and the division of Neurosurgery to form the Neuroscience Institute at SIU Medicine to improve access to care, the patient experience and outcomes through an integrated model of disease-based, multidisciplinary care in a single location within the Mid-Illinois medical district in Springfield. This exciting development is well on its way to fruition and will allow the patients of central Illinois to get all their clinical neuroscience care, right here in Springfield, under one roof.

Thank you for your interest in our department.
