Evaluation

Students may receive an overall clerkship rating of:

  • Satisfactory
  • Unsatisfactory

The Department of Medicine faculty determines these ratings by evaluating a student’s performance in each of two categories:  Clinical Skills/Application of Medical Knowledge, and Professional Behavior.  In each category, a student’s performance may be designated:

  • Meets Expectations
  • Does Not Meet Expectations

Sources of information used for each category and percentage weights assigned in determining ratings are:

CLINICAL SKILLS / APPLICATION OF MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE WEIGHT
    1.  Review of Narrative Comments from Clinical Coaches 50%
    2. Clinical Skills Exam
         - Ambulatory Cases 10%
         - Standardized Patient Encounters 10%
         - EKG Interpretation  5%
         - CXR Interpretation  5%
         - Patient Note/Admission Orders  10%
         - Diffential Diagnosis and Diagnostic Justification  10%
PROFESSIONAL / NON-COGNITIVE BEHAVIOR
    1. Review of Narrative Comments from Clinical Coaches 80%
    2. Peer Evaluations 20%

Overall clerkship ratings will be determined as follows:

  • SATISFACTORY – Students must receive “Meets Expectations” ratings in each of the objective categories to receive a satisfactory rating for the clerkship.
  • UNSATISFACTORY – Students who receive an “Does Not Meet Expectations” rating in either of the objective categories will receive an overall rating of “Unsatisfactory” for the clerkship. Recommendations for remediation to the Student Progress Committee will be based on the number of “Does Not Meet Expectations” ratings received. A rating of “Does Not Meet Expectations” in one category will result in a recommendation for up to a four-week remediation; a “Does Not Meet Expectations” in two categories, up to an eight-week remediation. For each of the categories, specific remedial activities will be suggested. While this plan is adhered to in almost all instances, the faculty of the Department of Medicine reserves the right to make exceptions.
