The Citizens Club of Springfield’s January 26 public policy breakfast covered a subject close to home: the shortage of health care professionals and its current and future impact on Springfield. SIU School of Medicine Dean and Provost Dr. Jerry Kruse was the featured speaker and Dr. Stephen Stone , SIU Medicine professor emeritus, served as moderator. The discussion covered the types of medical positions most affected, factors contributing to the shortages, the impact on our region, and what was being done or can be done to address the issue.

Student Medical Insurance Carbondale medical students are assessed two fees for healthcare: Student Health Fee - Providing access to the Student Health Center . Student Medical Extended Care Fee - Proving the SIU Student Health Insurance Plan that covers expenses such as emergency rooms, hospitalization, surgery, ambulance, specialty care, and advanced laboratory studies and imaging. Students who already have comparable health insurance coverage may request a refund of the Student Medical Extended Care fee by submitting a Petition to Waive . To meet this mandate, all students will be billed the Student Medical Extended Care fee each semester that pays for the SIU Student Health Insurance Plan. Students who already have comparable health insurance coverage may request a refund of the Student Medical Extended Care fee by submitting a Petition to Waive . OB-GYN residents bring wellness to the community

Resident chefs make a healthy meal for Springfield Ronald McDonald House Our fantastic four-year OB-GYN residents just took "community wellness" to a whole new level during National ACOG/CREOG Resident Wellness Week. They swapped their stethoscopes for spatulas and whipped up a scrumptious lunch for the families over at the Ronald McDonald House. Their paella, refreshing fruit salad, garlic bread and delicious cake were a hit. Their culinary skills not only filled tummies but also warmed hearts. Cheers to our residents for spreading joy and representing SIU Medicine in our community!
