Welcome

Since 1974, SIU Diagnostic Radiology has been ACGME-accredited. Upon completion of their training, our diagnostic radiologists are prepared to enter a fellowship, private practice, or academics.  Residents spend their first year in Internal Medicine, including two months in Diagnostic Radiology rotations. The second through fifth years are spent in radiology. There are two teaching hospitals - Memorial Medical Center and HSHS St. John's Hospital.

Springfield Clinic and CIRA support SIU Radiology's hybrid program. A wide range of radiology aspects will be covered. Our residents have access to high-end procedures and diagnostic studies that are typically not available at other institutions.

Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology

Method of ESIR resident selection

SIU Diagnostic Radiology plans to offer ESIR training to one of our Diagnostic Radiology residents in her/his PGY5 year. Interested residents will apply at the end of PGY3 year. Final selection of the ESIR resident will be completed early in the resident’s PGY4 year. By this point in training, each resident will have had multiple rotations on image-guided biopsy and drainages and vascular intervention – both staffed by IR faculty. After this level of training, we believe our residents can make a truly informed choice of IR as a career; and our faculty will have had ample exposure to our residents to assess aptitude.

A committee of IR faculty, led by the SIU Diagnostic Radiology Program Director, will select one resident into the ESIR training program. The committee will take into consideration board scores, In-Service and RadExam scores, research, previous IR-related scholarly activities, and the faculty evaluations of each resident.
