Beaux Cole, PharmD, RPh, CCHP

Dr. Cole serves as Director of Pharmaceutical Standards and Operations for the Office of Correctional Medicine at SIU School of Medicine. He’s been with SIU since 2019, focusing on clinical pharmacy programs and system-wide pharmacy operations. He’s currently working on statewide process improvements for IDOC.

Laura Knuf, PharmD, RPh, CCHP

Dr. Knuf is employed as a Pharmacy Operations Professional by the Office of Correctional Medicine at SIU School of Medicine. She has been with SIU since 2024 and has 14 years of practice experience in retail pharmacy. Her current focus is on evaluating medication management and administration processes within the Illinois Department of Corrections facilities, in an effort to develop and implement standardized policies.

Elizabeth Kunz, PharmD, RPh

Dr. Kunz is a Pharmacy Operations Professional for the Office of Correctional Medicine at SIU School of Medicine. She's been with SIU since 2024 and has worked in retail pharmacy for 18 years. Liz takes special interest in patient counseling and medication therapy management.

Brian Strader, PharmD, RPh

Dr. Strader works as a Pharmacy Operations Professional for the Office of Correctional Medicine at SIU School of Medicine. He has been with SIU since 2024 and has worked as clinical pharmacist for 19 years. Currently working to improve medication management process for IDOC.

Those participating in this activity will be able to:

  • Identify appropriate and inappropriate prescribing practices for gabapentinoids in correctional healthcare settings to reduce misuse and optimize patient outcomes.
  • Evaluate the risks associated with gabapentinoid use, including potential for misuse, dependence, and co-prescription with opioids, to make informed clinical decisions in patients that are incarcerated.
  • Demonstrate evidence-based strategies for safely deprescribing gabapentinoids in correctional healthcare while ensuring effective pain management and minimizing withdrawal risks.
