Sharen Barboza, Ph D.
Dr. Sharen Barboza is an internationally recognized expert in correctional mental health. She is a licensed clinical psychologist in New York and Florida with over 25 years of experience working with individuals in institutional settings. Sharen started her career as a psychologist at the maximum-security women’s correctional facility in New York, eventually being promoted to Chief Psychologist for the only psychiatric hospital serving incarcerated individuals within the state’s prison system. She provided leadership in managing mental health care in prisons and jails throughout the country with a private healthcare company for over a decade. Today, she monitors the mental health care of incarcerated individuals and provides training as well as program and behavioral management consultation. Her expertise includes suicide prevention, crisis management, self-injury reduction, trauma-informed care, professional boundaries, quality management, and staff wellness. She has published on suicide risk factors, dementia in corrections, treatment outcomes with individuals in restrictive housing, as well as the reduction of self-injury. She holds a master’s degree in Experimental Psychology from Tufts University, a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and is certified in Wholebeing Positive Psychology.
Those participating in this activity will be able to:
- Define the concept of resilience.
- Demonstrate the relationship between resilience and suicide risk.
- Identify at least three strategies for increasing resilience among incarcerated patients.
