    About me

    Dr. Laura B. Vargas is an assistant professor of pediatrics at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, specializing in neonatology.  She is one of the pediatric specialists recruited for St. John’s Children’s Hospital, which is a joint endeavor of SIU and St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. Vargas comes to SIU from the medical staff at Advocate Christ Medical Center/Hope Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn (2009-10) and the staff at Number One Rehabilitation in Pembroke Pines, Fla. (2000-03). She completed a master’s in clinical research methods and a three-year neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood (2009).  Vargas completed her pediatric residency, including a year as chief resident, at SIU (2006) and her medical degree at National University of Colombia (2000).  Vargas is board certified in pediatrics and in neonatal-perinatal medicine.  She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S.-Columbian Medical Association. She is married to Dr. Omar A. Vargas, assistant professor of general internal medicine at SIU School of Medicine and has three children.
