Sangamon County student art on display at medical school

Want to see what budding talent looks like? More than 80 works from the area’s finest young artists are featured in the Sangamon County Student Art Exhibit, currently on display in the Medical Library at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. The annual showcase of selected artwork by elementary, middle and high school students is in its 35th year.
The display represents the work of students from 29 schools in Sangamon County, selected by a jury of area art teachers.
“The Visual Arts help to define a community’s culture—through personal expression, experiences and shared values,” said Elizabeth Marcy, visual arts educator at Dubois Elementary School in Springfield who coordinates the exhibit. “By exhibiting and celebrating the artistic achievements of young students, organizations such as SIU School of Medicine emphasize the important role creativity plays in our lives. The act of viewing art also helps to build a connection between the artist and audience, in non-verbal, but still very tangible ways.”
The paintings, sculptures, pen and ink drawings and mixed media constructions are on display on the fourth floor of 801 N. Rutledge St., Springfield, and open to the public during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays.
A reception and awards ceremony for the artists will be held 4:30 – 5:30 p.m., this Friday, May 9, at the medical school’s library and auditorium.
