SIU Graduate Students Inspire Future Scientists at Brain Awareness Day

Published Date:

SIU School of Medicine Graduate StudentsWhen it comes to anatomy, everyone has a favorite part. Each year, graduate students from the SIU School of Medicine’s Neuroscience and Pharmacology concentration show some love to their top choice during Brain Awareness Week

Brain Awareness Week aims to increase public understanding of brain research. As part of this mission, the group coordinates a fun Brain Awareness Day for 8th graders at Franklin Middle School. This year’s event took place on March 27.

SIU graduate students Emmanuel Ojo, Savannah Brannan, Iqra Ahmed , Monika Poudel, John Johnson, Sujata Pandey, Olusegun Jimoh, Sadikchhya, Lamichhane, Bolu Baderinwa and Rajaram Kshetri led an interactive and educational classroom program. It featured a sheep brain demonstration, memory games, discussion and quizzes, providing students with a hands-on experience to explore the complexities of the brain.

SIU School of Medicine’s Department of Pharmacology provided the sheep brains and prizes for the interactive games, contributing significantly to the event’s success. The Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives further enhanced the teaching environment with informative handouts and booklets.

SIU School of Medicine extends its sincere gratitude to 8th-grade science teachers Brett Troemper and Camille Alger for their continued partnership and for providing their wonderful students with this valuable learning opportunity. Their dedication to science education has been instrumental in the success of this annual event.
