Learners recognize surgical educators with 2021 teaching awards

Medical students and residents have determined the recipients of the 2021 Department of Surgery Teaching Awards.

Nick Tadros, MD, MCR, was named the "Outstanding Educator of the Year."

Emily Serafin, MD, was the recipient of the "Community Faculty Teacher of the Year" award.

Samuel Grampsas, MD, and Melanie Barnard, MD, received the "Faculty Teacher of the Year for Resident Teaching" awards.

Norman Otsuka, MD, and Gordon Allan, MD, received the "Faculty Teacher of the Year for Medical Student Teaching" awards.

Philipos Gebremedhin, MD, received the "Resident Teacher of the Year" award.

Andrew Wilber, PhD, an SIU School of Medicine researcher and educator, studies how red blood cells produce hemoglobin and how gene-based therapies could improve treatment for inherited blood disorders such as sickle cell disease and β(beta)-thalassemia. His work aims to reduce or eliminate the need for lifelong blood transfusions while advancing more accessible therapies, reflecting SIU Medicine’s commitment to discovery, education and patient-focused innovation.
