Zak Gurnsey, MD, SFHM, FACP

A Springfield native, Dr. Zak Gurnsey is a 2006 graduate of SIU School of Medicine and a 2009 graduate of SIU's Internal Medicine residency program. After completing residency, he joined SIU's faculty in 2009 as a Hospitalist, a clinical role that he still maintains. His current academic rank is Associate Professor. He was promoted to Division Chief of General Internal Medicine and Departmental Vice Chair of Hospital Medicine in 2020. He has participated in numerous projects and committees at SIU, Memorial, and St. John's. He also currently holds a medical director advisory role in SIU's Office of Correctional Medicine.

Paulette Dove, JD

Paulette Dove serves as Senior Counsel for Health Affairs at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. Prior to joining Southern Illinois University, Paulette worked with physicians, medical providers, regulators and insurers in a variety of settings. Most recently, Paulette worked for the state of Illinois Department of Insurance as General Counsel and Deputy Director of Health Products, and for the Department on Aging as Deputy General Counsel. Before joining the state, Paulette established the legal team for a rapidly growing physician group, and also spent fifteen years in private practice. During her time in private practice, Paulette represented physicians, nursing homes, insurance companies and litigated complex civil matters. Paulette graduated from the Washington University College of Law at the American University, and completed her undergraduate work at the State University of New York at Albany.

Those participating in this activity will be able to:

  • Discuss the legal ramifications of the advanced directive types.
  • Discuss the medical utility of the advanced directivce types.
