We’re a little program with a big heart for teaching primary care physicians the art of sports medicine and taking care of athletes of all ages. 

Located in Quincy, Illinois, our fellowship offers a close-knit, supportive environment where fellows are known, challenged, and encouraged to grow. With deep community roots and strong interdisciplinary connections, we provide hands-on, personalized training that prepares physicians to confidently care for patients on the sidelines, in the clinic, and throughout their careers.

Attending Quincy Sports Medicine Fellowship includes:

Longitudinal rotations

The Primary Care Sports Medicine experience 

This experience will be provided through several clinics and/or locations and will provide the main primary care sports medicine experience for the sports medicine fellow. 

  • Orthopedic Walk-In Clinic (OWIC): This training will occur longitudinally during fellowship. This experience will expose the fellow to evaluation of acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries and conditions, fracture evaluation and management, muscle and tendon tears, dislocations / subluxations, and appropriate surgical referral to specialists. Patients of all ages are seen at the OWIC.
  • Rural Primary Care Sports Medicine Clinic: This will occur one half day a week as a longitudinal experience at Hannibal Clinic with a Primary Care Sports Medicine physician. The sports medicine clinic cares for patients of all ages with musculoskeletal injuries and conditions.
  • MSK Ultrasound Training: This training will occur longitudinally throughout the fellowship year. The fellow will have the opportunity to work toward RMSK ultrasound certification during their training which requires the fellow to obtain 150 scans as well as attending CME specific to MSK US. The fellow will be assigned a wireless handheld ultrasound (GE Vscan Air) to be able to use throughout the fellowship year. Learners will be exposed to Point of Care ultrasound in primary care and have opportunities to evaluate musculoskeletal conditions in their primary care clinic, the orthopedic walk-in clinic, and during training room rounds at the local colleges.
  • Athletic Training Room Rounds: The fellow will attend Culver Stockton College and Quincy University Athletic Training Rooms at least once a week and be in contact with athletic trainers throughout the week as athlete needs arise. Injuries seen in training room rounds include Sports medicine injuries and some primary care athlete concerns. This experience is supervised by sports medicine faculty.
    • Quincy University Athletic Training Room: Quincy University competes at Division II level and has an approximately 1,000 square ft. athletic training room to treat student athletes. The clinic is limited to Quincy University student athletes. The athlete will be evaluated in conjunction with one of the QU athletic trainers.
    • Culver Stockton College Athletic Training Room: Culver Stockton College competes at NAIA level II and has an on-site 1,100 square feet athletic training facility. Student athletes will be evaluated by fellows with faculty and one of the CSC athletic trainers. Culver Stockton College also has a Masters of Athletic Training Education Program which will allow the fellow opportunities for teaching.
  • Primary Care Continuity Clinic at the Quincy Center for Family Medicine: The continuity clinic is the core of our sports medicine program. It allows the sports medicine fellow to maintain essential primary care skills during their fellowship year. The continuity clinic will include patients of all ages and scope in family medicine and will be scheduled 1 to 2 half days weekly.
  • Midwest Orthopedics, Hannibal, MO.: This experience allows the sports medicine fellow to experience general orthopedic and orthopedic spine medicine in a rural setting. The primary care sports medicine fellow will learn joint exams, pearls of MSK history-taking, joint aspiration skills, and joint injection skills. Midwest Orthopedics has a broad base of patients of all ages with varied orthopedic problems.
  • Blessing Health System Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Quincy, IL.: This experience allows the sports medicine fellow to observe and participate in care of patients in trauma, sports medicine, upper & lower extremity concerns and joint replacement orthopedics settings.
    • The fellow will obtain skills in casting and splinting, joint injection and aspiration, management and follow up process for orthopedic injuries and conditions.
    • The fellow will participate in weekly orthopedic CME presentations and round-table discussions with the trauma surgeons where they will discuss patients seen on the orthopedic trauma service. The fellow’s primary responsibility is to be able to describe fractures, learn management of simple fractures and know when to consult with the on-call orthopedist.
  • Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation: The sports medicine fellow will rotate with physical therapists at Advance Physical Therapy, a multi-state neuromusculoskeletal and sports medicine rehab group. The sports medicine fellow will observe and assist patient rehabilitation with both surgical and non-surgical musculoskeletal problems.
  • Game/Event Coverage: The sports medicine fellow will, along with faculty, function as one of the team physicians while covering athletic events. Football for both Quincy University and Culver Stockton College requires a significant amount of time throughout the Fall season, but some Spring event coverage is also expected.
    • High School football will also be covered by the sports medicine fellow under the direct supervision of a primary care sports medicine trained physician.

Blocked Rotations

Columbia Orthopedic Group Sports Medicine Experience 

  • While continuing to maintain their primary care continuity clinic once a week in Quincy, the sports medicine fellow will spend five to six weeks in Columbia, Missouri at a tertiary care orthopedic center, Columbia Orthopedic Group. There they will have ample opportunity to interact with subspecialty orthopedists and primary care sports medicine specialists. Time is scheduled in the OR to see some basics of sports medicine orthopedic surgeries.
  • Columbia is about 2 hours from Quincy. The fellow will make their own lodging arrangements. Financial support is covered from the fellow’s education funds.
  • The sports medicine fellow will also have the opportunity to spend time with on-site MSK radiologists and will be able to observe some interventional radiological procedures such as lumbar epidural spinal injections and sacroiliac spine injections. 

Podiatry Clinic 

Several half days will be spent in a Blessing podiatry clinic in Quincy, Illinois. The fellow will evaluate forefoot pathology, orthotic fitting, preventative care, and evaluation of the diabetic foot. 

Rheumatology Clinic (Elective) 

Several days will be spent with the preceptors who specialize in a rheumatology clinic. The fellow will continue to have a clinic once a week at QFM to maintain patient continuity.
